The San Juans

By Helen Follis

Seagulls shriek
and stony crags
cry craven
for a silent world
where mountains
more ancient than man
rest in a watery grave,
while mountain tops
cling to what's left of life
as islands in the sound.

Helen Follis teaches at Issaquah Junior High School.
