Subject: Insanity hearing re: Francis Campbell

Synopsis: Francis Campbell was under 18 years old and was going to move away to live in a “state of adultery” with a man. Her only relative, brother Harrison Campbell, wanted the court to rule on her sanity. Dr. Hogg determined her to be sane.

In the Probate Court of Walla Walla Co.
To the Sheriff of Walla Walla County, Greeting:
In the name of the United States, You are hereby commanded to cite
Fannie Campbell
to appear before the Judge of the Probate Court of Walla County in said Territory, at the CourtHouse in the City of Walla Walla, on Thursday the 15th day of August, 1867, to answer as to insanity
and in this he shall in no wise fail ; and have you then and there this writ.
Witness my hand, and the seal of said Court affixed,
this, 14th day of August A. D. 1867

I hereby certify that I have served the within writ by delivering a true and correct coppy to the within named
Fannie Campbell
Done at the County of Walla Walla this 15th day of Aug”

Harrison Campbell named(?) respectfully show to this honorable court that Fanny Campbell now a resident of said County of Walla Walla is now suffering under mental derangement and is an unfit person to manage her affairs or to be at large Petitioner would further show that he is the brother and only surviving relative of said Fanny on this Coast and that said Fanny is a minor under the age of Eighteen years and that she is about to depart and live in a state of adultery with one James McFarland – Wherefore your petitioner prays that said Fanny may be brought before your honor and on enquiry instituted(?) to determine whether the said Fanny is
not an insane person
