Subject: Arrival of Chief Joseph in Spokane (on way to Colville Reservation)
Synopsis: A large crowd waited to see Chief Joseph arrive by train, but was disappointed.
Notable Quotation: The large crowd assembled was disappointed at the failure of ye red men appearing on the ground according to programme.
Observation: Note the playful but condescending tone of this, as if the arrival of the Nez Perce was theatrical entertainment.
A very large crowd of men, women and children were at the depot this morning on the arrival of the train from the west to get a glimpse of Chief Joseph and his party of Nez Perces. On account of failure to secure transportation the Indians did not arrive and will not be here until to-morrow evening between 5 and 6 o'clock. The party came west over the Oregon Short Line and are transferred at Wallula. A troop of soldiers were on hand to receive the returning wanderers and the boys will remain in camp near the city until Friday. The large crowd assembled was disappointed at the failure of ye red men appearing on the ground according to programme.
