The "portfolio system" and other approaches to curriculum

The portfolio system is a promising tool for improving undergraduate writing. Portfolio systems, while not prevalent, are present in a few universities: the basic idea is for a department to collect papers (typically between four and six) for a student "portfolio" as a graduation requirement.
