“Accept” is a verb and means “to take what is offered” or “to agree to.”
“Except” is a preposition and means “leaving out” or “other than.”

Verb: General Eisenhower accepted Patton’s plan.
Preposition: General Eisenhower agreed to everyone’s ideas except for Patton’s.
